Kapuas Regency (Indonesian: Kabupaten Kapuas) is one of the thirteen regencies which divide the island of Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan Province, Indonesia. Kuala Kapuas is the capital of Kapuas Regency. The population of Kapuas Regency is 329,646 at the 2010 Census; the latest official estimate (as at January 2014) is 352,977. The total area of Kapuas Regency is 14,999 Square Km (9.77% of the area of Central Kalimantan Province), which is divided into two portions – the ebbtide and non-ebbtide area. The ebbtide area (generally in the south) has potential for food crop agriculture, while the non-ebbtide area (generally in the north) has potential for people and private rubber farms. The areas bordering on Kapuas Regency are :
a.To the east, Barito Selatan Regency and Kalimantan Selatan Province (Barito Kuala Regency)
b.To the west, Pulang Pisau Regency
c.To the north, Gunung Mas Regency
d.To the south, the Java Sea.
In the north is a hilly area, with altitude ranging from 100 to 500 metres above sea level and with a gradient ranging from 8 to 15 degrees, and above that a mountainous area with a gradient ranging from 15 to 25 degrees. In the south is coastal land and marsh, with altitude ranging from 0 to 5 metres above sea level and with a gradient of between 0% and 8% and also be influenced by ebbtide; this area had vulnerability to flooding. Kapuas Regency also has a water territory (lake, marsh and some rivers). The 2010 Census recorded 329,646 people, including 167,937 males (50.98%) and 161,503 females (49.02%). Based on the total area, the population density was 21.96 people/km2. Selat district has the high population density rate, about 507.43 people/km2. Mandau Talawang district has the small population density, about 4,05 people/km2. In 2002, the existing Kapuas Regency (comprising 25 districts) was divided into three regencies (Kapuas, Pulang Pisau and Gunung Mas), so the total population was divided between these three regencies. At present, the total population of Kapuas regencies (in this publication) takes the data of population from year of 1999 until year of 2010. The composition and the spreading of population still not flatten because the existence of most people lives around the capital of regency and district.
