Java Mountains and Seas from East to West in 14 Days / 13 Nights

Travel Itinerary

Day 1      Arrival in Surabaya, transit through Jakarta, and transfer to Batu. Its pleasant hot springs high above sea-level are towering over the large town of Malang. Dinner and overnight in comfortable hotel.
Day 2 Minibus transfer Batu – Kelud. Beautiful road and rough track on the way to the Kelud volcano, which stands isolated in a striking environment. Lunch on the way and picnic dinner. Overnight in tents.

Day 3 Early morning splendid exploration of crater lake, numerous fumaroles. Drive through pineapple plantations and rice-fields to Tretes, another very pleasant resort flanking the Arjuna-Welirang volcanos. Dinner in restaurant and overnight in hotel.

Day 4 Ascent of Welirang (1 h by jeep + a 5.5-hour trek to the summit + a 3-hour trek down). Visit of craters and reservoirs of liquid sulphur. Encounter with workers who haul the sulphur down. Picnic breakfast and return to Tretes. Dinner and overnight in hotel.

Day 5 Free morning, walk to waterfalls, visit of a banana market and transfer to Surabaya (possibility to visit a tofu factory (type of soyabean cake served with a number of Javanese dishes) for your flight to Semarang. Lunch in traditional restaurant. Dinner in typical restaurant and overnight in hotel. 
Day 6 Semarang is the center of traditional medicine using plants and mushrooms. We will try to visit a factory for some of these products. Long but beautiful road from Semarang to Baturaden, a small mountain village flanking the Slamet volcano. Lunch on the way. Dinner in local restaurant. Overnight in hotel.

Day 07     Ascent of Slamet, a 6 to 7-hour long trek to base-camp. Picnic lunch and dinner. Overnight in tents.

Day 08     Ascent of the final cone and, depending on the volcano activity, observation of its five summit craters. Trek down followed by a swim in hot springs. Picnic lunch and dinner in local restaurant. Overnight in hotel

Day 09
    Baturaden – the Galunggung volcano – easy trek to the crater’s rim and inside the crater, depending on its activity. Overnight in hotel in Cipanas, a spa fed by a number of hot springs. Lunch on the way, dinner and overnight in hotel.

Day 10 Cipanas – Papandayan, very beautiful area. A 30-minute trek to the craters and observation. In November 2002, this volcano erupted right in front of our eyes. Visit of new craters. Lunch on the road followed by minibus drive to Bandung. Large industrial and university town in West-Java, Bandung is the technology showcase of Java. Dinner in restaurant and overnight in hotel.

Day 11 Visit of the Museum of Geology and of the VSI office (which stores all information on the activity of each Indonesian volcano). Lunch before drive to the Tangkubanparahu volcano. Descent and exploration of its various craters. The alert level of this volcano was raised a few times in 2002. We reach Jakarta by late afternoon. Dinner at leisure and overnight in hotel.

Day 12 Jakarta – Pulau Seribu, a 1.5-hour sea transfer to a small paradise island. Indeed, Alam Kolkol floats on an ocean of beauty and tranquility, away from the noise and frenetic life of the capital. Lunch and overnight on the islet. Overnight in bungalow.

Day 13 Snorkelling and rest in clear waters, a place of incredible purity although close to the huge Jakarta megalopolis… Discovery of the islet unusual fauna. Return to Jakarta in the afternoon. Evening and dinner at leisure. Overnight in hotel.
Day 14     Visit of old Batavia including Plaza Fatahillah and its huge bronze canon, the Wayang (puppets) Museum, the port of Sunda Kelapa. The port’s famous and magnificent bugis ships still sail to trade spices and precious wood to Borneo (Kalimantan). of the National Museum (among the richest in Asia), Monas, the National Monument and it gold-plated flame. Lunch in Javanese restaurant. Airport transfer and international night flight.
